Week 1: Architecture 01

Architecture 01

In this entry I am showing works of two forward-thinking architects and firms.

Two Iconic Structures Across Dubai Creek

In the link above you can find many examples of interesting architecture from this organization, Coop Himmel Blau. Once you enter the site you can search by Name for Two Iconic Structures to find the specific examples I want you to see. The idea that architecture can merge with the form of sculpture is in line with IFDM and postmodern media recognizing a merging of different media, style, art and communication. Furthermore I think I heard that architecture will be one of the disciplines added to the IFDM program so it seems fitting here.

The next example below is an Iraqi architect named Zaha Hadid. Many designers do not approve of her designs, labeling them as eye candy or simply placing form above function, but I, too, believe that we can have our cake and eat it, too, by successfully combining the pragmatic needs of space with art. Once again, it seems obvious to me that this type of exploration applies directly to the goals of IFDM, which is why I have included it here. I feel compelled to point out that she has a bit of an ego, but that’s OK; one might argue that the babbling babe of Babylon has earned it. We all have egos.

Here are some images of Innovation Tower at Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute, designed by Zaha Hadid:
