Week 2: Retro Futurism 01

Retro Futurism Art at Dark Roasted Blend

I love stuff like this! What you can find in the link above is fascinating on multiple levels. From a design standpoint, looking at what was imagined is great, and so is taking that and comparing it to how things actually worked out. A lot of this stuff was never intended to become reality, but it is the exploration that makes it compelling, and also noting that these ideas come from different places. Of course another reason is looking at illustration styles from the past. What I especially like are the dioramas of this type of vision.

Here we see an album cover featuring artwork that mimics this retro-futurist style, from an album fittingly titled The World of Tomorrow, by Komputer, released on Mute Records:

Komputer: The World of Tomorrow

“The World of Tomorrow” was taken from the theme of the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City. So you can understand how these ideas of predicting the future actually go back a long way. We are fascinated by  innovations in design and how those reflect our personalities and societies and I can tell you that this particular aspect, in retro-futurism, is one of my favorites!
