Week 1: Temple

I used to drive by this structure frequently and I thought I would add a second sketch for this week, just as I added a second portrait. This is an LDS Church Temple off of Eubank. I’m pretty familiar with it but I was reminded of it while surfing around and I came across this link:

I really like the sharp, simple forms here. This and other such temples usually have consistent features across differing buildings. Architecture is a great way to study lighting, to understand form through light instead of raw mass. This is in broad daylight, and it looks nice, but I also like late afternoon/golden hour/magic hour lighting on a structure like this because you get those long, angular, sharp shadows that reveal that much more character. I love drawing buildings so I will probably do more.
